Având peste 16 invenţii la activ, Tom Wilcox este pasionat de nou, explorând arta digitală. Acest domn din Winsconsin în vârstă de 63 de ani ne va împărtăşi din propria sa experienţă.

Ce te-a atras la arta digitală?

Întâi a fost pasiunea pentru artă inspirată de către mătuşa mea Carol Wilcox, iar datorită unui vecin mi-am dezvoltat un interes deosebit pentru tehnică. După ce am terminat liceul am devenit designer de maşini. După mai multe tipuri de computere şi programe am început să fac artă şi de atunci am tot creat fractali. În tot acest timp am lucrat ca grafician şi ilustrator tehnic.

Ce crezi despre importanţa artei digitale?
Este majoră. Doar caută pe net şi vei vedea direcţia în care se îndreaptă. Păcat că o mare parte din galerii sunt pe dinafară. Ironic... sunt atât de mult în trecut încât nu pot vedea în viitor.

Poţi descrie câteva idei şi cum ai creat fractali?
Încerc să fac nişte lucrări artistice nu doar simpli fractali. Cred că asta văd privitorii mei- o alta abordare în ceea ce priveşte fractalii. Încep cu parametri de bază apoi prin prelucrare îi transform în concepte.

Ce îţi doreşti de la public?
Vreau să simtă ceva. Inspiraţie, bucurie... Ai şi alte preocupări în afară de arta digitală?
Sunt la fel de mândru de poezia pe care o scriu, este una din marile mele bucurii. Ar mai fi designul, computerul iar cea mai mare pasiune cred că rămâne călătoria.

What pushed you into digital art?
Well first came my love of art taught to me by an incredible artist, Carol Wilcox, my aunt who is now deceased. She was in a wheelchair with severe arthritis for more than 40 years. Also at a young age I was a friend of the neighborhood "Mr Wizard", a high school senior who was a genius. Through him I developed a strong interest in the technical. After high school I worked as a draftsman, then design engineer. I had one of the first Apple computers, also a Sinclair, a Comodore 64 then 128, then IBM PS2 Model 60. I used the IBM to create art with a paint program, Deluxe Paint developed by Electronic Arts using only one meg of RAM. I also used the DOS fractal program, Fractint. I have been creating fractals ever since. Throughout this time I also worked on the side as a graphic artist/technical illustrator

And what do you think about the importance of digital art?
It is major. Just browse DeviantART and anyone will see the direction art is taking. It's too bad most of the major city galleries are so out of touch. Ironic, isn't it. They are too into the past to see the future.

About the fractals, can you describe some of your best ideas and the way you create them?
I try to create art pieces and not merely fractals. I think that is what my loyal viewers see in my work - a different approach to fractals. Occasionally I like to return to my traditional fractal roots because traditional fractals such as from Tierazon are spiritual to me. True exploration. In Apophysis I start with a fractal based on the parameters I pre-set and develop the image through manipulation into a "concept" piece. See "Atom Splitter", "Einstein's Map of the Universe", "The White Man Cometh", "Hiroshima - Innocent Souls Rising", etc.

What do you want from the poeple that looks at your art?
I want them to feel something. Inspiration, joy, fear (see "Where Evil Lurks"), etc.

Do you have any art interests except digital art?

Tons! I am as proud of my poetry on DA as my art. It is my great joy to write poetry. Also product design, the computer of course, and my greatest passion, travel.
